After countless whispers that The Beatles were in negotiations to appear in rhythm based games, today it's official. The Beatles are coming, courtesy of Harmonix, but not as an expansion to Rock Band. They're getting their own music game. Now before you dismiss this as just a cheap way to milk the franchise a la Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, know this: Harmonix has said that this will a completely new music game built from scratch (though fear not it will be compatible with Rock Band instruments). The band's entire catalog will be covered in the game, and a lot of visual elements from the band's career will be utilized (just imagine Yellow Submarine and Sgt. Pepper).
First AC/DC, now The Beatles; Harmonix has scored another big group exclusively, elevating the competition with Guitar Hero. Now just imagine if they manage to score Pink Floyd and/or Led Zeppelin.
As far as concerns about band based music games go, if there's any group who deserves their own game, The Beatles are it. Their influence on the music industry cannot be denied, even by those who aren't fans. We'll just have to wait and see how the game shapes up. It's slated to be released next year, around the holidays of course (because that's what you do when you have a big game). Feel free to express your reactions and other opinions regarding this news.
